Alberta Backs Off Bid For 2030 Commonwealth Games

Alberta Backs Off Bid for 2030 Commonwealth Games

Host city for 2030 Commonwealth Games up in the air

Alberta withdraws support for Calgary-Edmonton bid

The Alberta government has withdrawn its support for a bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Calgary and Edmonton. The decision comes after the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) extended the deadline for bids to host the games to November 30, 2023. The CGF is seeking bids for the 2030 Commonwealth Games after Victoria, British Columbia withdrew its bid in 2022.

The Alberta government's decision to withdraw its support for the bid is a major blow to the hopes of Calgary and Edmonton hosting the games. The two cities were considered to be the frontrunners to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, and they had already begun to prepare a bid. The withdrawal of Alberta's support is likely to make it more difficult for Calgary and Edmonton to secure the necessary funding and support to host the games.

The CGF is now seeking new bids to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The deadline for bids is November 30, 2023. The CGF will then evaluate the bids and make a decision on the host city in 2024.
